CERCLA & FEDERAL FACILITIES SUSTAINABILITY RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM:
Reprisal/Britania/Defiance Room

This joint symposium will include presentations by Jim Van der Kloot, Land Revitalization Coordinator for EPA Region 5, and representatives of the Genzyme Center in Cambridge, MA, and the Save The Bay Center in Warwick, RI. Mr. Van der Kloot is at the forefront of sustainable cleanup and reuse innovations. The Genzyme Center is a Platinum LEED Biotech Company located on a former coal gasification plant that was awarded the 2006 National Phoenix Award for excellence in Brownfields redevelopment. The Save The Bay Center, an environmental education center built on a former municipal landfill, was the Region 1 Phoenix Award winner in 2005. The joint symposium will also include presentations on a local redevelopment project in Providence, RI, and DoD sustainability initiatives. These presentations will provide the basis for the roundtable discussion on the second day of the mid-year meeting that will enable the State and EPA attendees the opportunity to provide input and plan for further research on incorporating sustainability into cleanup decisions.

    As data is used for more purposes and at more complex levels, it is critical for EPA and States to work closely on our mutual needs to track facilities and waste flow. EPA speakers will discuss the status of two major information systems that are good examples of both our collaborative relationship and the challenges of sophisticated data needs.
