The rate at which resources are being consumed by contemporary society is alarming. All indications point to the fact that resource consumption is growing and will continue to do so. If the rate of consumption continues there will little left for future generations. The question is, given the anticipated growth in the United States, what can be done now to assure that a high quality of life – environmental, social and economic – is provided for the future? How can we assure that this generation passes on a legacy to future generations of which we can be proud?
Waste is the inefficient use of resources. Most products become waste within six weeks after purchase. Eight to nine pounds of waste are generated in making and transporting consumer products for every pound of waste discarded by consumers.
At ASTSWMO, our aim is to turn the tide on waste generation. As waste managers our role is vital in creating a world without waste. We will lead as a partnership of states with our stakeholders to develop and influence policy resulting in practical changes that accelerate our shift in thinking from waste to resource.
